For the past few weeks I’ve been randomly hearing about a mosque being built a few blocks from ground zero. It’s been online, on TV, even on the KGO news talk radio I listen to every evening driving home from work. I’ve put off writing about it, because it’s extremely frustrating to me.
It appears some people are saying it’s un-sensitive to those who lost a family member in the twin towers, to have a mosque so close to ground zero.
My answer is …~Muslims also lost family members in the attack~ are their feelings not valid?
We live in the USA. Freedom of religion is one of the best things about our country. Its not freedom of religion, when one religion is singled out.
There are American Muslims. So it would actually be Americans who would benefit from a mosque.
My issue with people opposing this is, if it were another religion wishing to build a house of worship…there would be no problem. It’s almost like we are allowing the terrorists to continue to win. How are they winning? Well lets see…were allowing them to create a divide in our society. And Muslims are being seen as something they are not.
I truly believe that the terrorists of 9/11 hated Islam. They hated the society they were raised in….And the limitations they were raised with. They blame Islam for the way they were raised. To be honest…some countries in the Middle East are ultra conservative. And they hated that! So what a better to fight it…but to make everyone around the world hate Islam…and assume that all Muslims are bad. They wanted to make Islam suffer…and it’s working!
Well I’m not Muslim. And I just feel that we are allowing those terrible terrorist continue to win. We are allowing them to change our country into being un-accepting, and creating an even bigger divide on religion. I don’t think god is happy with us. I don’t care what anyone says…I’m a Christian who lived in the Middle East. I have family there…and was never treated any different for my religion. Christians and Muslims have more in common than not.
We need to get over such things. We can’t move forward in life…if we are making a group of people pay for what a few lost souls choose to do.
Who are the people who would oppose such a thing anyway? Do they really think its ok to take the rights of there fellow countrymen away?
I pray the Muslims of this area will get there Mosque!
I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this.

For a religion that demands respect and sensitivity from others, why does Islam not show the same respect? I would be threatened with death if I were to draw a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed and post it here. Yet parts of 1 of the planes crashed through the roof of this proposed location. A "ground-breaking" date of 9/11//11 has been chosen. Coincidence? No one opposes the building of Japanese Cultural Centers but to build one at Pearl Harbor would be disrespectful. No question, they have the right to build it. I only question the motive. Even if your voice is pure Islam, better to let silence reign in this sacred place. That would speak volumes for your religion.
@anon..
islam is not my relgion (im maronite catholic)...but having lived in Lebanon..where muslims and christians live side by side. i know that what the media protrays of islam is false. there are bad seeds in all relgions.
and i'd really hate to see us get stuck in a vicious battle of the historical blame game
Thank you! it's nice to hear a supportive voice for a change!
Thank you for the kind words. Obviously the anon person didnt even read your words because their comment is so hypocritical and ignorant. Respect is a two way street. So how is drawing a negative picture of someone's beloved prophet of any religion respectful or deserving of respect? How is bombing someone else's country, stripping them of their resources, telling them how to live respectful but expect respect towards America? Get over yourself.
There are tons of Muslim events that happen in September and espcially Muslim Unity day because the person that the celebration is dedicated to was a Muslim that died in the Twin Towers attack on 9/11 so while we commemorate the muslims that died that day with love and unity, ignorant Americas assume its a celebration of the death of non-muslims. What about the sensitivity towards our feellings and the loved ones we lost on 9/11 or that doesnt count because the people that commited the act also claim to be muslim....sound fair to you?
Thank you for your kind words and very clear point of view. This has been mind-boggling to me and I am more horrified by the actions being taken against ANY mosque being built in many places around the U.S.
Thank you again.
Side note - to my understanding, there has not been any official comment from the builders or sponsors of this project regarding a Ground Breaking date. However, that date in question (as well as other misleading information) started appearing when the MTA was proposed with anti-Mosque ads.
@A Voice From NY - I was wondering about that! I do think if that was the case it would be in bad taste, but it's also the 1st day of Eid this year (inshallah), so on a religion aspect- it would make sense.
... but, I hope they aren't doing it then.
an excellent video on the topic . . .

I think a lot of people need to heal first. I don't know if there should be a mosque (Islamic Centre), but, I know that emotions are still raw on the death of so many people, and there were Muslims killed as well.
I don't support terrorism of any form, and I believe after all the history of slavery, occupation and genocide in the name of whatever, we all need to come to a place where we respect each other enough not to harm each other, or create legacies that attack a whole group of people due to lies and ignorance.
The question is, who gets to define Islam, and Muslims? Angie, I agree, "I'd really hate to see us get stuck in a vicious battle of the historical blame game"
Well said! There is so much controversy surrounding this issue and it just makes no sense to me. Freedom of religion is the core part of our constitution...and its not only Freedom of religion when it's sensitive to others or Freedom of religion when it's not near Ground Zero..it is FREEDOM OF RELIGION ALL THE TIME EVERYWhere in our country.
I am glad at least some people understand that. I am Muslim but love living in USA and consider the US my country!
